Who’s involved
The Project Leaders
Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles (DRAC) Nouvelle-Aquitaine
DRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the regional arm of the French Ministry of Culture, is the contracting authority for the project. The French State owns both the organ and Saint-André Cathedral, which is a listed historic monument.
It oversees all operations relating to the restoration of the historic organ case and the reconstruction of the great organ, coordinates the various parties, and ensures compliance with heritage and cultural requirements.
Direction Générale de la Création Artistique (DGCA)
The DGCA, part of the French Ministry of Culture, oversees the project’s artistic direction. It ensures that the new organ is conceived as a contemporary creative work while remaining grounded in musical and heritage traditions.
An artistic and scientific committee of experts and leading organists advises the DGCA.
Design and works supervision
The design and supervision of the project are entrusted to specialists in organ building. Thierry Semenoux is an accredited technical consultant for organs protected as Monuments historiques, working with the Direction Générale des Patrimoines. Based in Bordeaux, he has extensive experience in the restoration of historic organs throughout France. His role is to prepare the tender documentation, advise the contracting authority throughout the procurement process, and supervise the works through to final acceptance.
He is joined by Jean-Baptiste Dupont, an accredited technical consultant for organs, internationally active concert organist and titular organist of the cathedral. Together they form a complementary team, combining musical and technical expertise to deliver a major project: a 21st-century great organ for Bordeaux Cathedral, rooted in tradition and open to innovation.
Association Cathedra
Founded in 2014, Association Cathedra promotes sacred music and the organs of Saint-André Cathedral in Bordeaux. It is responsible for fundraising and securing private patronage to help finance the reconstruction of the great organ.
Cathedra also presents an annual musical season, including vocal and instrumental concerts and organ recitals, contributing to the cathedral’s cultural life.
